Finding Substitutes for High Fat Foods
Low Fat Substitutes
We all have our favorite foods. They are those guilty little pleasures like potato chips and bacon. Life just seems unfair when you can't have them. You feel deprived in some way. But, those foods that you love so much come with a price in terms of your health. The excess fat and cholesterol can, over time, contribute to serious health problems. So what to do? Try substituting some of these low fat foods as an alternative to those less healthy, higher fat favorites.
Dairy products, such as ice cream and butter seem to be among most peoples favorites. The only problem is that these dairy products are loaded with large amounts of saturated fats, which are generally unhealthy. Try substituting these foods for high fat products:
Salad Dressings: Fat free salad dressings or salad dressings without oil, such as honey mustard dressing
Tuna or Sardines in Oil: Use fish packed in water or with vegetables
Ground Beef: Soy meat substitutes or Mushroom based meat substitutes
Ice Cream: Frozen yogurt, ice milk or fruit sherbet
Whole Milk: Fat free or skim milk
Cream: Evaporated canned milk
Sour Cream: Low fat yogurt or fat free sour cream
Butter: low calorie margarine, spray margarines, applesauce when baking
Cheese: Vegetable oil based cheese substitutes, reduced fat cheeses
Mayonnaise: Fat free or reduced fat mayonnaise or salad dressing
Bacon: Ham bouillon or smoke flavoring
Potato Chips: Pretzels or baked chips
Simple substitutions like this can make a huge difference in your daily intake of unhealthy saturated and trans fats. Overall, these changes can decrease your risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke and many other debilitating illnesses that wreak havoc among the American public.
