Jar Sprouting Instructions

Sprouting seeds in a jar is a really easy and cheap way to experiment with sprouting as an alternative food source.  You'll want to start with seeds that are easy on beginners.  Alfalfa seeds or oats are fairly easy to sprout in a jar.  Next locate a warm, dark place to grow your sprouts.  You might want to consider a closet or under the kitchen sink.  You are basically trying to imitate the effect the ground has on a newly sprouted seed.  You will need a few supplies to begin.  A half quart mason type jar, a piece of cheesecloth, and a rubber band are all necessary.

To begin sprouting, soak your seeds overnight in lukewarm water to get the ball rolling.  The next day place the seeds in the jar and cover with the cheesecloth.  Secure the cloth with a rubber band around the top of the jar.  Immediately rinse the seeds to remove any residue released during soaking.  Place the jar upside down in a small bowl, so the excess moisture can drain away.  Next, place the jar and bowl in the dark place that you selected.  Continue rinsing the seeds/sprouts every day for two to three days.  You will have to monitor the sprouting process and decide when they are ready for harvest.  Two to three inch sprouts are ideal.  On the last day, before you harvest, move the jar into a sunny spot and watch your sprouts turn green.

Fresh sprouts are loaded with vitamins and make a great addition to all of your favorite foods.   Add them to burgers, stir fry, or salads.  Sprouts can become a welcome asset to your daily eating routine.
