Uses for common herbs and spices:

Allspice:  A spice that combines all the flavors of cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.  Used to season pie fillings and ciders.

Anise:  Small seed with a licorice flavor used in cookies, cakes and candy.

Basil:  Common garden herb grown for its flavorful leaves.  Used in Italian cooking, soups, and stews.

Bay Leaf:  Dried leaf used to flavor meats, soups, and pickled foods.

Caraway:  Spice mainly  used in baked items, such as cookies and cakes.

Cardamom:  Seeded spice called for in certain Indian recipes.

Cayenne:  Hot pepper, ground and used in Mexican dishes or chili.  Also known as red pepper.

Celery Salt:  Mixture of salt and ground celery seed.  Called for in recipes to season meats or soups.

Chervil:  Herb grown for its leaves.  Used as a flavoring in soups and salads.

Chili Powder:  A mixture of ground peppers.  Called for in many Mexican dishes.

Cinnamon:  Bark of the cinnamon tree that is ground and used as a seasoning in many sweet baked products.

Cloves:  Spice used to season meats such as ham.

Coriander:  Spicy seed used to season meats and baked products.

Cumin:  Main ingredient in curry seasoning.  Lends a spicy flavor to foods.

Dill:  Herb most known for seasoning pickles.

Fennel:  Herb whose seeds and stalks are used.  Similar flavor to anise.

Garlic:  Spice grown underground.  Used either whole, chopped or ground.  Used to flavor a variety of foods.  Very versatile spice that can be included in almost any meat, soup, or vegetable recipe.

Garlic Salt:  Combination of salt and ground garlic.  Used as seasoning in meat dishes.

Ginger:  Used in cookies and the famous ginger bread.  Also used to add spice to Asian meals.

Marjoram:  Powdered leaves are used to flavor stuffings, meats and sausages.  Very unique flavor.

Mint:  Herb grown for its leaves.  Used to flavor vegetables and soups.

Mulling Spices:  A collection of spices used to flavor mulled wine or cider.

Mustard Seed:  Ground and mixed with vinegar to form the condiment mustard.

Nutmeg:  Sweet spice ground and used in pies and other sweets.

Onion Salt:  Mixture of salt and dried ground onion.  used to flavor meat and stews.

Paprika:  Sweet red pepper, dried and ground for use.  Used on seafood, meats, and in Turkish foods.

Pepper:  Common name for ground black pepper.  Used as a common table condiment.  Is useful for seasoning everything from vegetables to eggs.

Poultry seasoning:  Mixture of sage, thyme, and other spices.  As the name implies, poultry seasoning is used to flavor turkey and chicken.

Pumpkin Pie Spice:  Mixture of ground cloves, cinnamon, and ginger used to give pumpkin pie its unique flavor.

Rosemary:  Leaves and flowers of this plant are used to flavor pizza dough, stews, and sauces.

Saffron:  Expensive spice used in Indian dishes.

Sage:  Leaves ground and used to season dressing and meat dishes.

Tarragon:  Herb whose leaves are dried and used in pickled foods and fish dishes.

Thyme:  Herb whose leaves are dried and ground for use as seasoning in stuffing, poultry and seafood dishes.
